n. 1 a the process of elevating or being elevated. b the angle with the horizontal, esp. of a gun or of the direction of a heavenly body. c the height above a given level, esp. sea level. d a high place or position. 2 a a drawing or diagram made by projection on a vertical plane (cf. PLAN). b a flat drawing of the front, side, or back of a house etc. 3 Ballet a the capacity of a dancer to attain height in springing movements. b the action of tightening the muscles and uplifting the body. Derivatives elevational adj. (in sense 2). Etymology: ME f. OF elevation or L elevatio: see ELEVATE
